Dear Second Grade Families
Don’t forget to “Fall Back” and set your clocks back one hour so that you arrive to school on time on Monday!

Thank you for attending Parent- Teacher Conferences.  Our goal at Oasis is to have 100% participation and most of the time that goal is met!  Thanks for being involved in your child’s education!

We would also like to thank ALL parents/volunteers that made our Scholastic Book Fair such a success. It was the perfect time of year to hold the book fair and have such a decorative theme!  Remember that a percentage of the money that we made at the book fair is returned to Oasis Academy.

We had a great time at our Halloween Party --Thank you to all the parents that helped make this a success. Here is a picture of our Ghouls!!
Math
Last week students finished adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers using open number line and the arrow method.  Our students have done a fantastic job working on learning 4 different strategies to add and subtract with 2-digit and 3-digit numbers.  Miss Garcia and myself are very proud of all our 2nd graders.
This week we will start off working on word problems that will allow students to use their addition and subtraction strategies.  We will be determining whether a problem is a part, part, whole problem or a whole, part, part problem. Then we will move towards working with gathering data, creating graphs, and interpreting graphs.  All of this and of course “high number” work!!
Here's the homework schedule for this week...
Monday
Word Problem Worksheet
Tuesday
IXL R.1 Interpret Tally Charts and Tables
Wednesday
IXL R.2 Interpret Bar Graphs
Thursday
IXL R.7 Interpret Pictographs
Language
The second graders completed their mini book on Halloween collective nouns.  This week we will move onto learning about adjectives and how they describe nouns.  By learning about adjectives, the 2nd graders will be able to add them into their Opinion writings to make them more descriptive.
  Writing
The second graders are going to begin working on writing an Opinion Piece.  Each student must think of something they can convince their parents to get or do by stating their opinion and supporting their opinion with specific reasons WHY!
Projects
We continue to experiment with matter.  This week the 2nd graders watched dry ice turn from a solid into a gas as we added warm water.  Our class also transformed a solid crayon into a liquid and back to the form of a solid!  Ask your 2nd grader how our class did this experiment!  Students also tried mixing water and oil, as hard as they tried students could not keep those two liquids mixed.
