Week 35 -- May 29-31

                                                                                      May 29, 2018

Dear Bighorn Parents,

It’s hard to believe that we are down to the last 2 weeks/7 days of school!!
As mentioned last week there will be no homework for the remainder of
the year.  Students will be working on a few “mini projects” in class as we
wind down on this 3-day week.

First of all a HUGE thank you to all the parents, family, and friends that
were able to come to the 2nd Grade Decade Project.  The students worked
very hard to become experts on their decade and Miss Garcia and myself
as always learned a few new facts along the way!

In math we will continue to review, complete a few mini assessments,
and complete an end of the year assessment.  This assessment will be
given over a few days as it is lengthy. It will be used by your child’s
3rd grade math teacher to get a snapshot of your child’s strengths
and weaknesses in math.

Finally this week Oasis is sponsoring a
final Book Fair.  It is a BOGO (buy one,
get one free sale). This is a great opportunity
to get a few books for your child to read over
the summer.  The book fair will run Tuesday
through Thursday, with the hours of 7:45-
8:15 am, 11:15 am-2:30 pm, and 3:45-4:30 pm.

We hope that everyone enjoyed their long Memorial Day Weekend.
The next 2 weeks are sure to be busy as we finish out the 2017-18
school year and move into summer.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bloomfield and Miss Garcia

Week 34 May 21 - May 24

Dear Bighorn Parents,

With instruction of 2nd grade math standards completed, the remainder of the school
year, we will be focusing on standards that have not been completely mastered.
Our math will consist of many “mini lessons” and “mini assessments” on previously
taught material to ensure that students who previously were at mastery level are still
there and students that had not mastered a standard have the opportunity for additional
instruction and practice so that they may be reassessed.

This week will be our last week of math homework!

at 3:15 pm in the cafeteria.  This has been a big research project and students are
making many connections. Come and learn about the decades from 1890-2009.

Last week was the last week of spelling from Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Rowlett.  Students
will not have a new spelling list for this week.
Remember, Monday, May 28th is Memorial Day!  Oasis Academy will be closed but
we will see everyone back on Tuesday, May 29th!  Wishing everyone a safe and fun
4 days!!

Reading News from Mrs. Rowlett
MAPS testing for 2nd graders will be on May 23 in the morning. Please make sure your child is well rested and gets to school on time this day.
Last week was our last week of spelling. All the 2nd graders did a great job all year learning all the new spelling patterns.
We are also finishing up our chapter books. Please remind your second grader to read 20 minutes each night even if they don't have an assigned book.

Have a great week!

Week 32 May 7-May 10

                                                                                  May 7, 2018
Dear Parents,

Here we are in Week 32!  The days are getting warmer and longer (as I write
it’s 8:00 pm and not completely dark), and our year is getting shorter.  I know
this was mentioned a couple of weeks ago but, it is very important that your
child comes to school with a water bottle labeled with your child’s name.
This is especially important on our P.E. days (Monday and Wednesday).

Math
Last week we worked on a new strategy (Arrow Method) to add and subtract
within 100 and 1,000.  All week the students were guided through problems,
worked in partners, and worked independently using the Arrow Method.
In the beginning of the week (Monday and Tuesday) standards will continue
working on adding and subtracting within 100 and 1,000.  Students will have
a mini assessment on this standard on Tuesday.

In the latter part of the week, we will be reviewing graphs.  Students will be
working on creating and interpreting picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots.

Projects
The 2nd grade historians are becoming experts on their decade.
The research part of this project will be completed by Tuesday and
students will be beginning to put together their project boards.  It’s been
very exciting to watch teams of students researching and getting excited
about their decade! The next blog will include our presentation date!

Wishing everyone a wonderful week and all the Moms, Grandmas, and
Aunts a special Mother’s Day!!
