Week 7

Pajama Day was a Huge Success!!

Thank you to all the families that donated to the Childhood Cancer fund.  Oasis Academy raised over $1,000.  The students had great fun lounging in their jammies all day!

We just finished our Social Studies project and presented our TRIBES agreements to the kindergarten students.  We are starting our next project this week. The focus is MATTER.

Homework this week will be worksheets not IXL. We are working on concepts that are not covered on IXL so Mrs. Bloomfield and I made up worksheets that follow the concepts learned in class! Help your child remember to complete the worksheets and return them each day.

Have a great week!

Wow last week was a short week but a busy one.

Last week in math our focus was to continue renaming 3-digit numbers. It has taken a lot of work with manipulatives and working with a partner but I believe we have it!!

Along with renaming we continued work with writing numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form.  It got a little tricky when the place value was out of order, for example--What number is 6 tens 3 ones 4 hundreds? What number is 5 + 300 + 40?  But after only a couple of times students realized that they have to read the problem carefully, making sure the place value is in the correct order.

Homework This week
Monday--IXL M.4 Value of the Underlined Digit--tens and ones
Tuesday--IXL B.2 Comparing Numbers Up to 1,000.
Wednesday--IXL M.5 Value of underlined digit up to 100’s.
Thursday--Worksheet

In Language this week we have been working on Nouns, nouns, and more nouns...we are still learning about singular and plural nouns.  This week we studied nouns that are irregular in the plural form.  Our focus was on nouns that ended with y, f, and nouns that you have to change the spelling of the singular form to make the plural form.  Here are some examples...
Singular                       Plural
penny                            pennies
scarf                              scarves
child                              children

We finished our second big writing project about ourselves.  This week we will be drawing portraits to go along with these wonderful writing projects.  We also will be finishing up our first PROJECT. We will be presenting these projects to the Kindergarten class soon.

Hope your week is great!!

News From Mrs. Rowlett

Hi 2nd Grade Families,

Last week was a short week but it was a busy one.  In Language arts we were busy looking at long and short vowel words.  We sorted words into categories and wrote the words.  We have been writing great entries in our Journals and have been working on writing 5 star sentences.  Our Reading Strategy groups are up and running.  Students should be reading 20 minutes each night.  If they finish their nightly assigned reading early they may read any book of their choice.  On most night students will have a reading response sheet/log to complete.  They will only do one page per night not the whole book. Remember students will have reading homework Monday-Thursday.

We will be starting spelling this week.  Words will be introduced on Monday and a list will be sent home in their binder for extra practice at home.  We will be working with these words daily as our Work on Words Daily 5 choice.  We will have a spelling assessment on Fridays.

Have a great Week!

Dear Second Grade Families,

Here is a look at our week last week!!!

Math
In math we have been very busy learning about the hundreds place.  We worked on a mini math project in which 5 bags with straws in them were shown to the class. Students discussed the best possible way to count all the straws.  After some discussion it was decided that dividing them into tens would be the best way to count the straws.  Also, Students have been exploring up to 3-digit numbers with base ten blocks and place value charts.  As we work with 3-digit numbers here are some of the ways your child is seeing them:
standard form = 274
word form = two hundred seventy-four
expanded form = 200 + 70 + 4,
place value chart = hundreds    tens    ones
                                   2           7         4
THIS WEEKS MATH HOMEWORK
Monday-No Homework-Labor Day
Tuesday- M.2 Place Value Models--Up to Hundreds
Wednesday- C.4 Writing Numbers Up to 1,000 in Words
Thursday- A.9 Even and Odd Numbers on a Number Line

Language
We are adding on to our knowledge of nouns.  Students are now learning about singular and plural nouns.  As a class we are creating Tree Maps to help us see the different ways to make singular nouns (names one person, place, or thing) into plural nouns (names more than one person, place, or thing).

Projects

We are getting close to completing our first project--Tribes in Action.  During the first 2 weeks of school we worked on learning about the Tribes Agreements--Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, Appreciations/No Put-Downs, and Right to Pass.  This past week students were broken into groups (They selected their top 3 agreements that they wanted to work on.).  Because this is our first group project we create "Working in Groups Norms" to help us stay focused on task.  So far the groups have created a poster to announce their agreement.  We will continue this week creating puppets and writing short puppet show scripts that shows each agreement.

Mark your calendar...
Picture Day for Room 17 will be October 8 at 10:30 AM.

 News from Mrs. Rowlett

Last week in our Language Arts Class was an exciting week.  We finally got Daily 5 fully up and running.   Students were able to choose from all 5 Daily 5 choices during our rotations. The new rotations that were added were word work -- we completed vowel pattern puzzles and sorted the words according to their vowel sound.  We also introduced Listening to reading below you will find links to the great websites we use, if your child would like to listen/explore them at home.  The reading strategies we learned and practiced were:
Check for understanding (comprehension) -- Who did what and where (fiction) and What did I learn (non-fiction.
Back up and Re-read (comprehension) -- If you can't answer who did what go back and re-read.
Cross Check (accuracy) -- Does it look right?  Does it sound right?  Does it make sense?
Stretch the sounds (accuracy)

Homework -- Your child will have a book to read each night -- They should be reading 20 minutes a night.  Some students will have sight words in their binders to practice reading too.
