Dear Parents,

Thank You Daisies Free Stock Photo - Public Domain Pictures

Teacher Appreciation Week was awesome!  Thank you so much for the lovely notes, flowers, candy, gift cards, and other gifts.  The Teacher Appreciation Week Committee did an amazing job providing the teacher’s with treats throughout the week.  Between Italian Sodas, Popcorn Buffet, Mini Bundt Cakes, and a delicious Azteca Luncheon to cap off the week, we will not need any treats for weeks.  Miss Garcia and myself are so thankful for all the “love”!

This week in math students will be learning some new games and reviewing math standards that have been worked on over the year.  Along with reviewing in math, students will be completing assessments for report cards.  This will be a very busy time, as much of our time will be spent assessing small groups of students and individuals.

Final Week of Math Homework...
Since this is the last week for homework and we will be doing lots of review, students will get to pick their own IXL Objectives to work on.  We are just asking that students pick an objective and work on it for 15 minutes every night.  It can be any 2nd grade objective that your child selects.

It certainly was a beautiful weekend for Mother’s Day!  Miss Garcia and myself  hope all our “Bighorn” Moms had a fantastic, love filled Mother’s Day!!

Reading News from Mrs. Rowlett
We will be completing assessments this week during our reading block. Please have your child choose a book to read and record it on their reading log. Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Miss Garcia & Mrs. Rowlett

Dear Bighorn Parents,

Here we are in May!!  We are winding down with only 12 days left of school.  This year is quickly coming to an end, but there is still work to be done.

We have completed instruction in all standards in 2nd grade math.  For the remainder of the year, we will be reviewing standards in 2nd grade math.  This week we will identify 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes, partitioning 2 dimensional shapes, and reviewing measurement with metric and customary units.  Since these are review standards, some of the IXL objectives will be repeats.  Please have your student work on the assigned objectives for 15 minutes.

Here’s the homework for the week...
Monday
IXL U.6 Identify Shapes Traced from Solids
Tuesday
IXL U.8 Shapes of Everyday Objects Part 2
Wednesday
IXL S.9 Which Metric Unit of Length is Appropriate?
Thursday
IXL S.3  Which Customary Unit of Length is Appropriate?

Projects
Last week in projects students dissected a tulip and worked on identifying parts that included stamen, anther, filament, pistil, stigma, style, and ovary.  They had a blast checking out all the parts we have read, discussed, and drawn.   Students also started creating their plant model.  This work will continue this week.

It’s hard to believe that we are down to the last few weeks as a second grade class.  The next 3 weeks will go very fast.  While Miss Garcia and myself will be sad to see our second graders get ready for third grade, we will look back with many fond memories.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Moms!!  We hope that you have a special day filled with joy and love!!

Quarter 4 Week 6

April Showers

                                                                                       May 1, 2017
Dear Bighorn Parents,

Welcome to the month of May!!  Even though we are solidly in the season of spring, winter temperatures have occasionally creeped in and this week there are summer temperatures (high 70’s into the 80’s) in the forecast.  Please send your child with a labeled water bottle.

Last week students focused on the final standard in 2nd grade Math--equal groups and building arrays to show repeated addition or the foundation of Multiplication.  Students were so excited!
As students work on this important foundational skill.  They learned about equal groups, repeated addition, arrays, columns, rows, multiplication equations, factors, and products.  Miss Garcia and myself were very impressed with how quickly the 2nd graders picked it up!  They are looking more and more like 3rd graders everyday.
We will review this work on Monday and assess, so there will be no homework Monday night in math.

With instruction of 2nd grade math standards completed, the remainder of the school year, we will be focusing on standards that have not been completely mastered.  Our math will consist of many “mini lessons” and “mini assessments” on previously taught material to ensure that students who previously were at mastery level are still there and students that had not mastered a standard have the opportunity for additional instruction and practice so that they may be reassessed.  With that being said some of the IXL Objectives will be repeated for additional practice.

Homework
Monday
Equal Groups Assess-No Homework
Tuesday
2-Step Word Problems Worksheet
Wednesday
IXL Q. 5 Read Clocks and Write Times
Thursday
IXL Q.6 Time Words: O’Clock, Past, and Quarter
Wishing everyone a fantastic week!  The weather should be great for baseball, softball, and lacrosse.  Enjoy it while you can as we know winter can always stop back by for a visit.
